Mark Wallinger
Mark Wallinger, Ecce Homo (1999), Photograph by John Riddy
At the 49th Venice Biennale, Wallinger's exhibition in the six galleries of the British pavilion featured recent and new works including sculpture, video, painting and photography. A new work entitled Facade was created specifically for the Biennale. Facade is a lifesize colour photograph depicting the British pavilion mounted on vinyl coated polyester on scaffolding in front of the building. In this way, visitors were confronted by an image of the actual space when entering the Pavilion, creating the effect of stepping into an illusionary landscape.
Outside the pavilion, an earlier work entitled Oxymoron (the British Union Jack re-worked in the colours of the Irish tri-colour) flew the flagpole. On entering the first gallery, the viewer was faced with another lifesize piece, the sculpture of Jesus entitled Ecce Homo, which was first shown on an empty plinth in London's Trafalgar Square in 2000. Other works included video pieces in darkened galleries, a new lightbox and two new pieces of sculpture and installation.
