Howard Hodgkin presented an exhibition of 24 paintings in the British Pavilion, commissioned by Julian Andrews, Director of Fine Arts Department at the British Council. For Time magazine, Robert Hughes wrote: ‘There are two outstanding exhibitions this year. One is historical: ‘The Arts in Vienna from the Founding of the Secession to the Fall of the Hapsburg Empire’… the other is a one-man show by Howard Hodgkin at the British Pavilion. Not since Robert Rauschenberg’s appearance at the Biennale 20 years ago has a show by a single painter so hogged the attention of visitors, or looked so effortlessly superior to everything else on view by living artists.’ This was the first year the British Council engaged a rota of Royal College of Art students to act as stewards to provide constant supervision at the Pavilion and to handle catalogue sales and enquiries. As such we were able to compile accurate attendance records of 50,000 visitors.
Commissioner: Julian Andrews (British Council).
Assistant Commissioner: Teresa Gleadowe (British Council).
