George Frampton Peter Pan (1915) bronze, 53 cm in height

Konody placed the Pavilion in the hands of the Venetians for the 1922 exhibition, and they invited Frank Brangwyn, so closely involved in pre-war Biennales, to act as commissioner. Lack of time prevented the realisation of Brangwyn's original desire, in his words, "to have a fine display of decorative art, to make each room complete with furniture, carpets and wall decoration, a music room, a dining room, etc."* The works selected by Brangwyn were so weak, however, that, according to Konody's account: "Bourlet's, the packers, thinking that such an exhibition would be injurious to British Art, asked me to inspect the works before they were sent off, and to see if I cannot do something to make the show more creditable. At the eleventh hour I stepped in and secured some 30 or 49 pictures... which saved the British section from the being a complete fiasco and added to it just a note of distinction."**

*Letter to Romolo Bazzoni, 3 November 1921 (Fondo Storicio ASAC, Serie Scatole Nere Padiglioni: Gran Bretagna, busta n.9, "XIII Biennale 1922")

** Confidential letter to Domenico Varagnolo, 15 April 1923 (Fondo Storico ASAC, Serie Scatole Nere Padiglioni: Gran Bretagna, busta n.8). Among the artists whose works he added were Augustus John, Charles Ginner, Mark Gertler, Gerald Kelly, William Nicholson, John Nash and Sickert.

(Taken with kind permission from Britain at the Venice Biennale 1895-1995 Edited by Sophie Bowness and Clive Phillpot).

Commissioner: Frank Brangwyn
